Most of the Pyronauts have two ears that face slightly forwards, and capture sound in the form of vibrations.
I can play staight accoustic but you may have trouble making out what I'm singing about, however a mic for vocals is my first request, followed by a direct line in for my 1/4" banjo pick-up, if trhat's not too much to ask, then a mic on the bass drum, followed by one for the tamborine would be next in line. otherwise, enclosed areas are best for my accoustic show, as to have some insulation from the random amorphos soundscapes which wander on the desert breeze. amplified sets are preferable, as they tend to be less taxing on the voice, followed by any set with the flowing of free drinks, dinner, party favors, snacks, ect.

next is the co-ordinates, tell me where you are at, so I can make a note of it. I also tend to play sets which cater to the theme If I am able. however, I must confess, I don't jam along with d.j.s too well, I prefer to give them their space & hopefully they will give me mine. unless I move over to percussion, then I jam along with gusto.

so, that's my manifesto.
hard to say for sure other than center cafe friday night.
all other plans are tentative & my angle is to work for the best offers I can get.
sound systems set up for accoustic/electric music are preferred & treats sweeten the pot.
but past expirience tells me that where ever I end up camping (x-factor) will determine my nearby favorite haunts
(I wheel my gear around on a cart) that is unless I get a ride on an art car/flying saucer, ect.
so far, every one on the list who has made an offer is in concideration but it boils down to where I'm at.
Find our Art Car, Projekt Funway...We'll have a sound system and be making clothes for peeps to model then take with them. A banjo for the runway music would be wonderful!

so, I'm this one man banjo guy....
it's kinda weird, but I've been really passionate about it & I've gotten pretty good in the 3 years I've been playing around the bay area. the thing is, I started getting my shtick together & I thought it was the greatest, or at least had the potential to really rock so I really went for it. I was a one man band who played the banjo. I carved my own style out of sloppy rhythm. my feet do the basics & I sing my heart out. there you have it, the part that gets me though is the tradtion that I have enterd. the banjo has it's connotations & a cultural style which accompanies it. I was never bluegrass, nor am I (though I've been working on my bluegrass medely). singing came the first in my life , along with the allure of rhythm followed later by song craft with the stringed instrument, at first a guitar and then as soon as I obatined one, the banjo. the banjo, the banjo. I've tied my destiny to these five strings. I played it with my nails until the frequency of shows lead to bleeding fingertips & then I made my way into fingerpicks. I sat behind my trashy black drum kit playing the banjo, working out the foot work. the tamborine was a logical choice for me, for it's portability, it posesses a sleek & streamlined quality to my senses. I decided that this was what I was going to do, I grabbed a name, generic though it be, it is self explanitory, I use the number 1 though many prefer the o-n-e, It's pretty much the same to me, & by the way, I would have used my name (sean lee) but it was taken. so, this is how I constructed the pigeon hole, my musical comfort zone, high seat of the monkey band as I have called it in song, mr good foot on the drum, lefty on the tamborine, banjolismo mysterioso & m.c. witchdoctor microphone jazz jam singing lead. an idea I must thank esmerelda strange for. you see, in esmerelda's one woman band, there is a girl who plays the drums, the accordion player & the singer. so, spun the idea into my "bandmates" & that all just part of the structure. I play a funky mix of tunes, a style music I call zig zag blues, banjo funk, souped up old timey tunes, spooky, cooky, gobbelin music, and a patchwork assortment of tunes from all over. My gratitude to the hobo gobbelins & especially dylan mc puke for his hard work and producing the hobo gobbelin song book, a gate way to a legacy songs from the ages. I take them in & transmit my own version. that's where I'm at & you, you are a part of my tribe, you joined this, maybe I asked you or maybe you came here on your own, perhaps to keep up with my activity (if that's the case, you should key in to my myspace page where I keep my active calendar). otherwise, give me some sense of why you are here, what you seek, the nature of your interest or merely a few good words.

I play a 5-string & I just sort of made up my own hybrid style. started out with just my nails for picking & struming but after they wore down to the quick , I had to learn to use picks (3 finger & a thumb). mainly rhythm spiced with a bit of fancy picking, I call it swamp glam or (jokingly) slop hammer. I played with a jug band www.hobogoblins.com for a while & this further defined the style I had started which is not based in any of the traditional styles which prevail but rather in expirimentation, songwriting (I started with a guitar) & rhythm (trance). this is an element of my overall craft which is my one man band set up.
in a nut shell,

your words and intents
I'll give you what I can.
a song, a sentiment.
a half cooked notion.
a feeling, a rhythm
riffs wrapped in ditties
fingers reaching for a certain sound
you were summoned here
now what have you?
I ask you for an offering
more or less
significant
something real
(or imagined)
next to nothing
it's not too much to ask.
though you must be ready to listen.
for if you won't hear my words, the are worth no more than silence
afterall.
I offer you this sound,
though to receive it, you must desire
you must listen, feel, dance, sing, sway,
give yourself over to the incantation
I give you the means to seek me out.
a golden gift to be discovered.
but you must care enough
to take it in. to make an offering in return.
it can take many forms
shapeshifting in dreams
it tells you what it means
but you have to want to understand.
otherwise,
this too is meaningless....

Banjo on the Run
A most excellent showman, !1manBanjo! is a dextrous wizard on the banjo, and keeps the beat with his continuously percussing feet. His performance is practiced and slick and he's always willing to belt out a tune that's brings the right mood to any occasion; I once heard him capture the sound of shimmering light dancing over the water. This dynamic solo is not to be missed. I give you four stars as a symbol that I believe in your ability to keep on growing and striving for ever-higher levels of sonic excellence. As far as personality goes, he's got a great one.

I'm interested in putting together an association of musicans who are interested in playing in a group with me. some what like the project I call "thee boggy beat" in that it includes washtub bass, washboard, tincan & junk percussion but not so much of the focus on goblinism. I want to build a rhtyhm section, I also want to work with folks who can sing. talented multiinstrumentalists are also welcomed. I want a format which can be more inclusive than my one man name will allow

Rides Offered to BRC

I know this is early... but for some poor Burner it may decide if they are going to BM or not.

DETAILS

I will be offering a ride from the Bay Area to BRC. I have a Ford Ranger with a passenger and two jump seats open. The passenger seat will be reserved for a large person. The two jump seats are facing each other and cramped. If a large person does not take up my offer then we can rotate seats on the way up to BRC.

My Ranger is in excellent shape with AC, open rear window, cup holder in the back, XM radio. I have a bike (with lock) rack that can hold up to 4 bikes. The bed of my Ranger has a tonnou so your stuff will be locked for all road stops. SPACE IS VERY LIMITED!!! YOU MIGHT HAVE TO CARRY SOME OF YOUR STUFF ON YOUR LAP!!!

Routes, Stops and Pick Up Locations

I live in Petaluma. I will pick up anyone in SF, North Bay, East Bay or along the final route. If you really really really in need of a ride and you are not in these locations... then lets talk!

I will be making rest stops at all rest stops. Potty breaks and need for a smoke (NO TOKE) or strech are very much welcome! So are taking pictures.

I have two routes in mind.

1. 13 hour trip up hwy 120, yosemite, hwy 395, Reno, and BRC.

2. Hwy 80 with a meet up with other Burners at the El Dorado Buffet (very yummy) in Reno.

I always went for 1manBanjo because it's easier to type 1 than one, but so many promoters (if given the option) choose "one man banjo" or "sean lee's amazing one man show". so I'm taking a survey, I must make these conciderations for my upcoming website.

A.K.A. One Man Banjo. A one man show. A !1manBanjo! show is energetic, incites movement, dancing, the clapping of hands, participation & a couple of sing alongs. Combines old time tunes in a unique rhythmic fashion which is (though at times dark) a vibrant expirience. A.K.A. Sean Lee, 1mb has been in developement for over a decade and offers a wide variety of songs, from it's roots in what we call the zig zag blues to banjo funk, swamp glam: progressinging into gobbelin music ( www.hobogoblins.com ), and selections from Cheshire rock opera & what we call the Harlequin theory at work. S.Lee sings plays the banjo in a sloppy rag time rhythm to the beat of a bass drum kick & a tamborine shoe. see http://1manbanjo.multiply.com & www.myspace.com/1manbanjo for sights & sounds

I love thee.

halloween battles it's last stand against Santa & his turkey messanger. friday night at anon salon says that a gobbelin in red is often mistaken for the devil, the magic works & we may do new years'. saterday green gobbelin plays for the kids on the corner as they wait for their friend to buy booze, they all got up drunk & danced around to the hungry rat song, then paraded down the street doing the hideous clown dance. caught the spectres of eavaporating parties. sunday caught the last gasp of the fruitvale day of the dead as gentleman death, for children & laughing ladies with flower offerings & photo opps, the little one scared was there for my unmasking when the skull came of to reveal a black nosed clown underneath, he laughed out loud. Jack-o-lantern smiles and a samhain styles, tonight the gobbelins dance the harlequin dance amid mad jesters, spooks & spectres. candy corn confetti!!!

I am quite inspired by Inkwell's rhythm makers, and tho my picking technique pales to that of Kit, I am very much intendint to connect with the right wash tub/gut bucket player and washboard/tin can rhythmist. it's the jug band power trio. so if you know any one of a similar ilk, let me know. thanks.

I miss the songs I used play. everything seems on hold for a moment, when every thing was getting so hot. now, I take a step back, and rue the moments lost. big plans, heart's desire, all of this wasting away. bone throbs, achey joined, restless in it's cuccoon.
yet, this is a magic time, a time between. one cycle ends, in a promise of glory, humbled tragically. another awaits to begin, breath baited on an aftertaste of sweet promise. this much allures me. these thoughts bring me comfort. and for all of those who knew me, as I was and who await me as I shall be, I give thanks.
you are the hearts which give me joy.
to those who saw me struggle, spread my wings and fly; to those who saw me crash and burn, witnessed a pheonix return, bore the spectacle of a metamorphosis. to those who have appreciated and expressed sentiments of support, I am humble in my grattitude to you now. for now my sense of personal greatness lies in hibernation, awaiting to awaken from it's dreamlike slumber. as a phantom wraithe like limb haunts a catacomb of my subconscious, my ghostly songs await to be reincarnated.

Go Jackie Jones!

Friday, February 4, 2005 (SF Chronicle)
One-woman band gives beat to farmers' market/Her guitar and saw act may
be on hold, but the music will never stop for longtime entertainer
Jackie Jones
Carolyn Jones, Chronicle Staff Writer

Amid the organic honey, kettle corn and spaghetti squash at the
Alemany
Farmers' Market is one of San Francisco's unsung musical treasures.
Playing her saw and homemade guitar, Jackie Floyd Jones has
entertained
thousands of shoppers over the years with upbeat songs from the 1920s
and
'30s accompanied by her sidekick, a dancing wooden cat. She's even been
incorporated into the murals there.
But the farmers' market is a little quieter these days, since Jones,
78,
had to undergo thumb surgery for arthritis in late December and has
been
unable to play. It could be another month or so before she's back at
the
music stand, making this the longest stretch she's been without a
guitar
in her hands since she first picked up an instrument, during the
Roosevelt
administration.
"People miss her, but they know she's trying to get back as soon as
she
can," said Amalia Martinez, senior clerk at the Alemany Farmers'
Market,
where Jones has played for more than a decade. "She brings so much to
the
farmers' market. She brings happiness to everyone who sees her. Not
only
adults like to listen to her, but children have fun, too."
She made the Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay honors twice, in 2001
for
"best and freest song and dance routine" and in 2003 for "best free act
with strings attached."
But the farmers' market is only a footnote to Jones' musical career.
Since
she arrived in San Francisco in March 1952 from New Orleans, Jones has
played music continuously, in dance bands, bar bands, Latin bands,
Russian
bands, stage bands, gay bands, Hawaiian bands, country bands and even
with
the legendary Cockettes. She's played at county fairs and strip shows
and
everywhere in between.
"The bottom line for Jackie has always been the music. It's always
been
the most important thing in her life," said musician Pauline Scholten,
a
friend of Jones'. "It's her passion, it's what energizes her."
Jones said that once her thumb heals, both from arthritis and the
resulting surgery, she plans to keep playing into her 80s. Retirement
is
not even in her vocabulary.
"I love playing music. I love the people. I feel that I'm
communicating
with people," she said during a recent interview near her Bernal
Heights
home. "Ordinarily you have to go through so many hoops to communicate
with
people, but with music it's immediate. I never want to stop."
Jones is not enjoying her time off. She's so antsy to start playing
again
she's trying to rig a child-size record-player, on 78 speed, to strum a
guitar so she can play the chords with her good hand. She also bought
29
CDs to learn some new material for when she returns.
"I will be back playing as soon as I can lift my dancing cat," she
said.
"I'm missing it a whole lot right now. It's not about the money. I miss
those people, all the mothers and kids and all that. I miss the
atmosphere."
Many of her fans would be surprised to learn that Jones, who's
usually
seen at the farmers' market in jeans and a flannel shirt, started out
life
as a would-be Southern belle. She comes from a "repressive Southern
family," she said, where her stepfather was in the Navy, her mother was
named after a Civil War admiral and her grandmother was a member of
United
Daughters of the Confederacy.
Jones spent her childhood in Pensacola, Fla., and New Orleans, where
her
parents became so desperate to "make a lady" of her they sent her to
the
Ursuline nun convent school. The nuns didn't have much luck, however.
Jones was kicked out at age 13 for stealing a cigarette from a priest
and
smoking it in the bathroom, emerging triumphantly in a cloud of smoke
and
pair of sunglasses.
From there she went to public school, and in her final year she got
an
accordion and taught herself to play. Knowing "only three tunes, all in
the key of C," she'd wander up and down Bourbon Street trying to sit in
with the bands there.
Finally she found a group that played cowboy music and let her join,
earning $3 a night. She was a quick study, and learned how to play just
by
watching them, and then branched out to other Bourbon Street bands.
Then,
at age 28, she started looking for work as a professional musician.
Reading want ads, she deduced that San Francisco and Los Angeles had
the
best opportunities for women. She tried L.A. first, hated it, and
headed
north.
San Francisco was an immediate hit.
"I loved it because every person on the street looked different,"
she
said. "I found work right away, and a place to live. Everything fell
into
place and I never left.
"I knew this is where I had to stay," she added. "I'd be tarred and
feathered if I ever went back to Pensacola."
She held a series of odd jobs, mostly assembly-line work, but worked
steadily as a musician at a time when women, let alone single,
tomboyish
women, had a hard time finding work that wasn't secretarial. Her
longest
stint was 10 years sorting mail at the U.S. Post Office's Rincon Annex.
She saved enough to buy a house, which she paid for in cash in the
early
1970s.
Independent, determined and pragmatic, Jones forged a music career
against
enormous odds. When a Latin band asked that she wear a sexy off-the-
shoulder dress, she did it. When the Santa Clara County Fair wanted her
to
wear a purple-and-green floral gown, she did. When she needed to learn
Russian tangos, she did. She learned every instrument and was willing
to
work any venue. Among her more memorable gigs was playing drums with
the
Cockettes, the rowdy midnight drag revue memorialized in a documentary
in
2002.
"It was fun. But I was always afraid the audience was going to jump
onstage and kill us," she said.
At the time, Jones lived in a boarding house with such future stars
as
actor Morgan Freeman and Navajo artist R.C. Gorman. She still keeps in
touch with people who were involved with the Cockettes, such as Peter
Mintun.
Jones' primary talents may be musical, but beneath her creative
impulses
she has a scientific, inquisitive mind. She earned a bachelor's degree
in
physical science from San Francisco State in 1962, and later went back
to
City College of San Francisco to study electronics and electronic
music.
Combining her scientific knowledge with music, Jones has created a
host of
new instruments, including the homemade guitar she plays at the
farmers'
market. It combines a washboard, painted red, with a Fender neck to
create
a unique sound. She has also made a xylophone out of cat food cans,
among
other inventions.
Among her trademark inventions is a pink dancing cat, which she
carved out
of wood and affixed with metal discs on its feet. Rigged to springs,
cords
and a foot pedal, the cat tap-dances on a wooden platform to produce a
lively backbeat for Jones' performance. She controls it with a foot
pedal,
which she operates while she's playing the saw, guitar or other
instrument.
Kids are transfixed by the dancing cat, and often crowd around at
the
farmers' market to watch it skip and hop in perfect time to Jones'
swinging 1920s tunes.
"I have to do what someone else is not doing," Jones said. "No one's
going
to want to stand there and watch just me. So I have to give them
something
interesting to look at. Otherwise you lose them."
Jones' love of novelty extends to her musical taste. Although she
can play
anything, these days she's interested in the early 20th century pop
songs,
which she described as "happy, positive, danceable. Kids like it, older
people like it. There's a lot of good stuff from then. It's a very
creative medium."
Using her electronics background, she's come up with a way to give
these
songs the full band treatment. She has recorded herself playing all the
instruments -- drums, banjo, accordion, bass, among others --
essentially
becoming her own backup band. She plays the recordings and saves the
saw
and guitar parts to play live.
Although she's never had formal training, she can play just about
any
instrument and learn any song just by watching and listening to others.
"She has a phenomenal musical mind," said her friend Pauline
Scholten.
"She's not flashy, but she never makes mistakes, she's got good rhythm,
good swing and a wonderful musical brain."
Another longtime friend, Sally Gearhart of Mendocino County, called
Jones
"a musical genius, mostly unsung."
"She was part of that whole wonderful music scene in the '50s, when
San
Francisco was just rocking," Gearhart said. "She's a wonderful spirit,
full of life and good-hearted fun. I've never seen anyone give such joy
to
spectators. I can't think of anyone in San Francisco whom the world
needs
more of."
"People use music in different ways," Jones said. "People who like
rock
have a physical response to it. They like to jump around to it, not
listen
so much. Course, I don't mind if they jump around to my music, too, but
I'd like to give them something to listen too, as well."
She thought about that for a moment, then added, "I'm just glad they
like
me."

legba came a walking on down a serpent highway to watch the red buddah sun rise, burnt the last swig of whiskey down. he banged a shadow drum to sound a rhythm, fanning to the flickering of red candle flames. the devil plays dirge upon his violin, rosin up his bow and give the children something to dance to, as he's prancing red and naked in the flame. so burn the whiskey down and watch the red voodoo sun rise, we've been walking with legba a long time, a serpent river flows by the purple mountain side. claw hammer fingers curl around his demon strings and rip forth the rhythm to give the pixies something to dance to, in a castle by the sea. there will be no sleep tonight.
